More than 150 tenants evicted in Hull

More private landlords are needed to house the high number of tenants being thrown out of social housing in Hull, new figures suggest.

Fresh data released by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) shows that 156 homes were repossessed by landlords and their tenants evicted between April 2016 and March 2017, with almost 70% of evictions by social landlords.

Social landlords evicted tenants from their homes in Hull on 107 occasions, compared to the 31 times private landlords repossessed their properties.          

The costly eviction process can often be lengthy, but the data reveals that one in 10 of the evictions were secured using ‘accelerated possession’, which is quicker than a normal eviction and does not usually need a court hearing.

There are various reasons why a court might order an eviction, including rent arrears and antisocial behaviour, and while the latest data reveals a rather high number of evictions over the past year, the volume of evictions has actually fallen from 194 repossessions in 2015/16.

The previous year, in 2014/15, 235 homes were repossessed – the highest number in Hull for almost 10 years.
