A landlord in London faces a backlash after posting an advert for a room inviting potential tenants to apply as long as they are not poor, have children, pets, or are gay.
The advert, which was placed in a high street shop window in Greenwich, read: ‘Please note – Children, Pet, DSS [people who receive state benefits], Gay/Lesbian, Benefit Seeker are strictly prohibited/not allowed.’
One passerby, Amanda O’Leary, noticed the advert and decided to post it on Facebook, which has since been shared multiple times online.
She told the Gay Star News: “At first I just laughed because I thought, “Is this a joke?
“You absolutely cannot single people out like that. There’s absolutely no reason why a gay person can’t rent the room.
“It’s so offensive and it has upset a lot of people.
“The person must be absolutely stupid to think they can write something like that and post a phone number and get away with it.”
Gay Star News contacted the number on the advert, and spoke with a man called Sharaf Ahmed who said he is not the landlord – just a middleman.
When asked about the advert, he responded: “Those were the rules from the landlord.”
