Landlord may need to convert flats into houses after failing to gain consent

A landlord who converted a house in north London into flats without consent could face legal action.

Javad Aghababazadeh was given permission by Barnet council in 2016 to demolish a bungalow and build two houses in Woodville Road, EN5.

But the landlord decided to convert the property into flats without consent and was exposed after an advert was spotted on Rightmove in May showing one of the houses being advertised as flats.

Aghababazadeh has now submitted a retrospective application to Barnet Council requesting to convert one or both of houses into flats. The application has not yet been made available to view in the council’s online planning portal.

If the new planning application is rejected by the council, the property in Barnet would need to be converted back into a house.

A council spokesperson said: “We are aware of the concerns raised, and the council’s planning enforcement team has been in touch with the property’s owner about plans for the conversion of one of the houses.

“A planning application for this has been submitted to the council and this will be considered by planning officers in due course once some additional information has been provided.”
