Salford is the latest city to launch a consultation seeking views on plans to expand its selective licensing scheme - claiming the move would “ensure all licensed properties are safe.”
Councillor Tracy Kelly, lead member for housing, property and regeneration, says: “Selective licensing is a vital tool that allows us to work with the private rented sector to hold rogue landlords to account and ensure that local people have access to flexible, affordable and well-managed homes.
“It will help us to continue to stimulate the wider Eccles housing market and open it up for further regeneration as a place where people want to live and stay longer.
“We would invite all interested parties keen to have their say on the plans to get involved in the consultation and share their views.”
Parts of Salford were previously subject to a selective licensing scheme from January 2015 to January 2020 and, according to a statement, “the evidence obtained from that scheme has persuaded the council that the scheme can continue to have a positive impact for the area.”
The council says the area proposed for the extension has a very low level of owner occupation and an increasingly higher-than-average level of homes in the private rented sector.
“Renters have also reported concerns around the condition of the properties available for rent” says the council, which claims an extension to the current regime would mean tenants would “have access to flexible, affordable and well-managed homes.”
The council adds: “It will also help to increase property values in the area as it improves with residents wanting to live there and stay there longer.”
