Gove backs Labour council's "unprecedented" licensing...

A London council says it’s been given the go ahead by Housing Secretary Michael Gove for an “unprecedented” third five-year term.

The council - Newham, where 63 of the 66 councillors are Labour - claims it is “at the forefront of championing renters rights.”

Coming into force from June 1 2023, once the existing scheme ends, the new one takes over in 22 out of 24 wards in the borough.

Mayor of Newham, Rokhsana Fiaz, says: “I’m delighted that the Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities has granted Newham council an unprecedented third five-year term. It’s a testament to our commitment to always champion the interests of our residents and renters rights. No residents in Newham should live in substandard properties managed by unscrupulous landlords”.

The authority claims the scheme will tackle poor property conditions, high levels of deprivation and antisocial behaviour, as well as giving protection to private renters and ensuring they live in safe and warm homes.
