At least four individuals who appear to be landlords have been named on the latest list of “deliberate tax defaulters” published by HMRC last month.
Some of the entries on the list are described as having a business or trade producing “income from property”. This is a separate category to others on the list named as being developers or property consultants.
One of the landlords owed tax of over £172,000 and incurred a fine from HMRC of over £86,000; another owed tax of over £57,000 and was fined in excess of £27,000.
Two others owed tax in excess of £33,000 and £34,000 and were fined over £19,000 and £22,000 respectively.
HMRC is careful to point out that each entry on the list is specific to the default date to which it refers (which in some cases goes back to 2010) and that the stated amounts do not “necessarily represent the full default of the taxpayer.”
Perhaps most significantly, HMRC points out that “the published person may have changed their behaviour.”
